John Everett Millais founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in late 1848, together with Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Holman Hunt. This group of painters, poets and critics rejected the academism prescribed by the traditionalist Royal Academy and propagated a return to the honest simplicity in art they saw as having been lost after the Renaissance. The exhibition reveals the shifts in Millais’ style, from the most audacious ‘primitive’ and confrontational works dating from his Pre-Raphaelite period to popular nostalgic subjects including his famous society portraits and the evocative late landscapes that also charmed Vincent van Gogh.

It kind of feels like you're there, in Kansas City while you're listening to this record; King talks to the public, he introduces, joking, his great musicians and plays wonderfully his guitar Lucille. A record that no blues lover should be without.

IMSLP:ORG closes down

IMLSP.ORG, the Internet Music Score Library Project has closed down, the founder of the site sadly announces:

On Saturday October 13, 2007, I received a second Cease and Desist letter from Universal Edition. At first I thought this letter would be similar in content to the first Cease and Desist letter I received in August. However, after lengthy discussions with very knowledgeable lawyers and supporters, I became painfully aware of the fact that I, a normal college student, has neither the energy nor the money necessary to deal with this issue in any other way than to agree with the cease and desist, and take down the entire site. I cannot apologize enough to all IMSLP contributors, who have done so much for IMSLP in the last two years.

There were more than 10.000 music scores in the public domain on the site
I must add I am not surprised at all, as I wrote in my previous post I re-started playing piano, and I was so happy to find on IMSLP the whole Mikrokosmos by Bartok, a serie of studies divided in 6 volumes, very popular among piano students. It was an old Sovietic edition with titles in cyrliic, but all the studies were there. The problem is: Bartok died in 1945, 62 years ago, therefore Mikrokosmos does not comply with the rule life+70 years and it's not in the public domain. But this is not the only case. I really hope they open again, but being more careful about published scores.

My New Digital Piano

This is my new digital piano, an Orla Stage Partner. keyboard with 88 hammer action keys, it definitely feels like a real piano. Various sounds including two different acoustic pianos, Rhodes piano, harpsichord, vibes, strings, brass and a wonderful organ at a reasonable price. Orla is an Italian brand which produces mainly very good oragan much used in chuches.
As you can see I have already put the Hanon method on it, as with this instrument I am a little rusty and I need to practise.

When you receive a confirmation email from your online travel booking services (such as for instance Ryanair for flights) all you need to do is forward it to a special email address and they organize all your travel plans. Of course it uses all Web2.0 goodies such as friends, possibility to see photos of places via Flickr, google maps etc.

Hi folks! I juts got back from PodcamUK in Birmingham where I had a great time, I meet a lot of new friends, learnt many interesting things and visited a wonderful city with a Great Art Museum, I'll write a detailed post about it.
Anyway for the next days this blog will undergo a radical renovation which will involve the change of my hosting, so you may notice some images won't show up or the site may also be temporarily down. You can have a look on how this site will look after the "cure" by checking my Italian blog, where the renovaton has already been done.
Anyway keep following because there are great things coming! I just ordered a brand new recording device: a Zoom H2, but it will take roughly a month to get here.

Exhibition : Andy Warhol in Edimburgh

Presenting Andy Warhol's exhibition at National Gallery in Edimburgh, Scotland; Guardian's journalist Laura Cummings wonders if the iconic references of the works of art of Warhol make still a sense today. I think this is a very interesting reflection.

His soup cans and Brillo boxes, Jackies and Elvises are nearly half a century old. They have lost none of their graphic force, but what about their original content? What has time done to an art based on images that were once so familiar anyone could 'recognise them in a split second in the street', as Warhol said, but which are now instantly recognisable only as Warhols?

The Cooker - Lee Morgan

When Blue Note discovered Lee Morgan a 18 years old trumpet player, they made him sign a contract and a series of 6 records were issued, one every two months. The Cooker is the 5th and Lee Morgan was 19 when he recorded this masterpiece, but he already played like an experienced musician. He ranked 3 in the Downbeat magazine's chart, after Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis (it was 1957). The band playing in this record is wonderful, these are people who made jazz history.

I love the Mediterranean sound of this band, songs are in English, Italian, Spanish, Arabian and Hebraic. Atlas Soul are based in Boston and New York; they create a fine mix of Latin and Arabian sounds with elements of Funk, Jazz and Blues. A sort of World Music with the wonderful voice of Italian singer Angela Rossi. They also have a social aim: the unification of diverse world's cultures and musics. "World Music for World Peace!"

A Diamond skull

Damien Hirst, former BritArt bad boy whose works infuriate and inspire in equal measure, did it again Friday with a diamond-encrusted platinum cast of a human skull priced at a cool 50 million pounds ($98 million).
The skull, cast from a 35-year-old 18th century European male, is coated with 8,601 diamonds, including a large pink diamond worth more than four million pounds in the center of its forehead.

It shows we are not going to live for ever. But it also has a feeling of victory over death

The 27th Cape May Jazz Festival pays Tribute to guitar legend Wes Montgomery

Wes Montgomery is universally considered one of the greatest innovators of jazz guitar, a natural extension of Charlie Christian, whose appealing use of octaves became influential and his trademark. He achieved great commercial success during his last few years, only to die prematurely.

It had taken Wes a long time to become an overnight success. He started to teach himself guitar in 1943 (using his thumb rather than a pick) and toured with Lionel Hampton during 1948-50; he can be heard on a few broadcasts from the period. But then Montgomery returned to Indianapolis where he was in obscurity during much of the 1950s, working a day job and playing at clubs most nights. He recorded with his brothers vibraphonist Buddy and electric bassist Monk during 1957-59 and made his first Riverside album (1959) in a trio with organist Melvin Rhyne. In 1960 the release of his album The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery made him famous in the jazz world. Other than a brief time playing with the John Coltrane Sextet (which also included Eric Dolphy) later in the year, Wes would be a leader for the rest of his life.

Montgomery's recordings began in 1953 with acclaimed reviews, but only moderate commercial success. Wes signed with Creed Taylor at A&M Records in 1967, and in the next two years he recorded three best-selling albums, stating simple pop melodies while backed by strings and woodwinds. His purist jazz fans were upset, but Montgomery's earlier albums began getting exposure on AM radio. During this period, he helped introduce new listeners to jazz while his live performances were as freewheeling as his early years. Unfortunately at the height of his success, Wes suffered a fatal heart attack. However Wes Montgomery's influence is still felt on a new generation of guitarists and jazz fans, many whom will pay tribute to this master during the 27th Cape May Jazz Festival, April 20-22, 2007.

A very interesting article on Guardian about writing music, an art that many musicians are forgetting.

Writing and performing music once went hand in hand. If we want to be better musicians, we need to revive the lost art of composition

Jacob Lateiner, the great American pianist and teacher, used to tell his students that they should write music every day. If not their own, then they should copy out someone else's. He felt that the physical act of a hand guiding a scratching pencil across paper was a vital part of a person's musical life, and that it would naturally lead to their fingers depressing the keys with more intelligence and care.

By the end of the second world war, with a few exceptions, composers no longer played their own instrumental compositions, and few instrumentalists wrote. The ideal of specialisation, with its closed shop and the resulting displacement between creator and performer, had become the norm.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) painted landscapes throughout his life.

However, during the first two decades of his long career they constituted an especially important area of experimentation for the artist where he explored composition, paint handling and pictorial structure in innovative new ways.

This is the first exhibition to examine this vital aspect of Renoir's achievement, and brings together some 70 landscapes.

The Fourth Aberdeen Jazz Festival will take place from the 7th to 11th March 2007. The festival has steadily grown into a significant event in the Scottish jazz scene and become one of Aberdeen's main annual festivals.

Over thirty performances at large and small venues across the city will ensure something for everyone. Venues this year include the Aberdeen Music Hall, the Lemon Tree and the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre.

International stars coming to perform include the acclaimed guitar virtuoso Martin Taylor who will be appearing with jazz singer Alison Burns, New York’s pre-eminent vibraphonist Joe Locke, the first lady of Swedish jazz Viktoria Tolstoy and the effervescent BBC Big Band with velvet voiced Elaine Delmar. Leading lights of the contemporary London jazz scene Gwilym Simcock, Polar Bear and the Neil Cowley Trio lend a real cutting edge to this year’s line-up line-up.

Add some South American rhythms courtesy of Venezuelan pianist Leo Blanco to the mix, along with a cool blast of acid jazz by way of Orange Alert from Chicago, and the Aberdeen Jazz Festival 2007 is truly catering for the taste of all jazz lovers. The month of March is a great time of year to visit Aberdeen. As well as great jazz sounds there are fine restaurants to dine in, cosy hotels and guest houses to stay in and lots to do whether you wish to visit the city’s great shopping centres or just relax and enjoy the wonderful scenery on our doorstep.

Can you imagine what type of music can George Benson and Al Jarreau produce together? can you? Well it is excatly how you imagined. I mean, when I first heard this CD I was not surpised at all, it was exactly the music I expected to hear. But on the other hand I enjoied the whole CD very much.

This 13-track recording features each of the stars on a new arrangement of one of the other's biggest hits - Jarreau adding lyrics to and singing Benson's signature instrumental smash Breezin', while the legendary jazz guitarist delivers a lovely instrumental version of the singer's eternally charming hit Mornin'
Givin' it Up also includes delicious covers of Seals & Crofts, Summer Breeze and Hall & Oates' (and Paul Young Smash) Every Time You Go Away as well as stunning new jazz vocal version of the Miles Davis classics Four and Long Come Tutu.

Givin' it Up was recorded between April and June 2006. Serendipitously, pop legend Paul McCartney happened to be in the studio next door during one session and dropped in to join Benson an Jarreau on an impromptu romp through Sam Cooke's Bring it in Home to Me. Neo soul Diva Jill Scott, performs Billie Holiday's timeless God Bless The Child. Roundng out the album is an instrumental take on John Legend's Grammy award winning soul smash Ordinary People and four new compositions, including a new Jarreau and Barry Eastmond composition Let it Rain which features Patti Austin and Chris Botti.

This can be a great opportunity for all indie artists featured on the Night Passage Jazz Podcast:

Chillout Productions, winner of the 2006 Award for the Best Festival in the UAE, has announced its open invitation for rising jazz artists worldwide to grab the opportunity of a lifetime by participating in the 5th Dubai International Jazz Festival, which is set to fire, start on the 1st of March 2007 for 9 days.

This call is a big challenge and a chance to take advantage of a lot of different creative opportunities for all international artists who deserve to be recognized and are keen on being associated with the most exclusive and entertaining festival in the region.

"In fact, the art scene of the UAE is growing so quickly and musicians worldwide are coming together at the annual Dubai International Jazz Festival to create and orchestrate a cultural phenomenon for the whole world. Now is the chance for rising artists to demonstrate their talents, gain recognition and develop networks and business relationships," Said Anthony Younes, Managing Director for Chillout Productions.

Artists and bands should primarily perform their original material while striving for a repertoire that is consistently entertaining, inspiring, original and at the same time meets the festival key objective of fostering cross-cultural understanding and cooperation.

"We are looking at artists' individual strengths and uniqueness, artists who can grant the audience with enriching modern tunes, an ethnic musical touch and some jazzy hints, but more importantly we are eager on how the artist (s) can contribute or fit into the overall program and create a strong impact on the audience" commented Anthony.

The music styles at the Dubai International Jazz Festival gratify to the different tastes of large audiences, creating an overall "jazzy" ambience. Jazz is the unifying factor to the cross-genre acts presented, including R&B, pop, rock, Latin, hip hop, rap, reggae, ethnic, gospel, etc.

"In order to be considered for the festival artists should mail us an actual kit that includes three CD copies, three DVD copies of their live material with contact information in the kit and on their material. Also included should be a brief biography of the artist or the band along with photos. Artists can find our mailing address on our website: www.dubaijazzfest.com." said Eric Kahi, Marketing and Communication manager for Chillout Productions.

"Applications are accepted throughout the year on an ongoing basis, but we start focusing on the selection process beginning October and we'll give priority for trios and quartet. Submissions for the Dubai International Jazz festival 2007 will close on the 15th of November 2006." Eric added.

My Own Delta, Where The Music Was Born

The Abbey of Pomposa, where modern music notation system was conceived

There is a Delta in Italy too, the delta of Po river, the longest in Italy. The source is in the Monviso mountain in Piedmont, it crosses many important Italian cities and after 652KM it flows in the Adriatic sea. And here, where the big river meets the sea is where I have my roots. My Grandpa moved from the Delta to the area south of Rome where I still live, 460KM from the Delta. Last week I went for a short visit to the Delta, back to my roots. I still have relatives there.
There are not big cities, Venice is around 100KM north, nature is wonderful here, It is an area where water and silence reign. And it is here, 8KM from where my grandpa used to live that the modern music notation system was created. The Pomposa Abbey at the time was on a island in the lagoon, surrounded by muddy waters. A monk in the Abbey, Guido D'Arezzo, around year 1000, conceived a modern musical notation system which was the base of the five lines staff system which we still use today.
Not far from the Abbey the charming town of Comacchio with its magnificent "Three Bridges", that with its peculiar shape seems to hold together all the lands of the lagoon.

There are few tourists, but those who come can enjoy a unique vacation among culture, nature and history, not to mention the lively beaches of the "lidi estensi"
A short but wonderful trip back to my roots, where music was born.

Richard Johnston

Richard Johnston is a contemporary bluesman. He brings his music all over the world and he is a one-man-band. I recently saw him live in Rome, he went on the stage and installed his equipment which consists in a drums set, with two snare drums played with pedals, amplifiers and a "cigar box guitar", a self made guitar that he made with a cigar box, two broom sticks and three strings. If you close your easy you'd think you are in front of a whole band, it is incredible the kind of sound he manages to create with that type of equipment. Beside the "cigar box", he also played the guitar, and he created a great feeling with the public, even the one of the La Palma club in Rome, usually very calm, with Richard Johnston at the end of the concert we were all standing and dancing.
